Looking to enjoy some unique, scenic boating in the colder winter months? In this guide, the team at Monterey Boats has put together our top 3 winter boating destinations in the West Coast – as well as a bonus pick! Read on, and see where you should be taking your boat this winter.

  1. San Francisco Bay, CA

If you’re looking to enjoy some beautiful scenery and gorgeous waterways, it’s hard to beat the San Francisco Bay – particularly if you enjoy boating at night. You can take in views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the beautiful skyline of the city.

Not only that, but there are tons of marinas, unique inland waterways, state parks and beautiful beaches within boating distance of San Francisco Bay. If you’re interested in fishing, just head out to the deeper waters of the bay to fish for halibut, sharks, great white sturgeon, white sea bass, king salmon and more.

The climate is typically relatively warm compared to more northern areas of California, but isn’t exactly tropical, so you’ll need to consider this when planning your trip.

  1. San Diego, CA

If you’re looking for warm weather and sunny skies, it’s hard to beat San Diego. As the southernmost city in California, you’re sure to experience warm weather, even in the depths of winter.

There are plenty of unique bays, islands, and sandy beaches to explore, as well as great fishing opportunities. If you do head out to deep-sea fish, though, make sure you head northwest out of the bay. Mexican national waters lie only about 15-20 miles south of the city, and you may find yourself in legal trouble if you are fishing in Mexican waters without a permit.

  1. Lake Tahoe, CA/NV

Looking for a freshwater boating experience on the West Coast? Why not head a little bit inland? Resting between California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is a great option if you like watersports like water skiing and tubing. It’s also home to a wide variety of fish including rainbow trout and brown trout, as well as kokanee salmon.

And with its arid, desert climate, boating on this lake is sure to provide you with warm temperatures and a great way to beat the cold that’s common throughout the rest of the US during the winter months.

BONUS: Seaside, OR:

We can’t just have all of our picks be in California! If you can handle some colder temperatures and a risk of rain, Seaside, Oregon is a great place to visit at any time of year – winter included!

Why? Because it’s home to the confluence of the Columbia River at Astoria. You can explore coastal tributaries throughout the area, and catch some of the largest runs of king salmon and summer steelhead in the lower 48 states – and experience the best sturgeon fishing in the world.
