Don’t let cold weather, choppy water or other factors keep you from enjoying your boat this fall and winter! While there are bound to be off days, you can try one of the following ideas to stay busy off the water.

Catch up on your reading

Many avid boaters have a foot-high (or more) pile of boating or outdoors magazines sitting at home. If you can’t make it out on the water, why not catch up on your reading? You’ll learn more about the industry, popular destinations, and techniques… without ever having to leave home. You can also visit mobile sites to read articles from your favorite boaters or organizations to stay in the know.

Customize your Monterey

If you’ve been thinking about a paint job, adding decals to your boat, or any other customization projects, try them this fall! You can complete these projects during your downtime so that your boat is ready to hit the water when you are.

Perform necessary cleanup or maintenance

For most of us, cleanup and maintenance aren’t our favorite activities—but someone’s got to do them! Take care of interior or exterior cleaning and small repairs or upkeep when you can’t be on the water—and we bet you’ll be glad you did later.

Get the kids involved

If you’re looking for ways to occupy your child on rainy or cold days in, consider appointing them your “assistant” for the day. They can help with small boat projects or cleanup and will often be eager to participate. If these tasks aren’t your child’s favorite, consider completing boat related arts and crafts with them to get them excited for your next trip out.

Attend a boat show

Keep a schedule of upcoming boat shows and events handy—because you never know when your plans may change! Having a backup at the back of your mind is always a good idea… and who could say no to an offseason boat show to help pass the time until spring?

Share photos

Now is a great time to share those on the water photos you have saved in your phone. Share them with friends and family, online or in person, as you anxiously wait for your next day on the water.

Learn new skills

It’s never too late to learn new boating skills! Take a skills course or research techniques online to find new methods of fishing, navigating… whatever you need.

Catch up with friends

Your crew of boating buddies should still get together, even off the water! Meet up at your favorite spot and catch up, share experiences, and talk boating.

Plan your next trip

Few things can help you pass the time until your next day on the water like trip planning! Get your family or crew involved as you look for new destinations and draft your travel itineraries. Not only will you be extra prepared for your next outing—you’ll be able to keep your mind occupied as you wait for the next good boating weekend.

How do you keep busy when you’re not on the water? Let us know in the comments!
