Our first stop on our international tour is Deinze, Belgium, a city and municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders.

There are a few famous Belgians from this province including Dirk van Brackel, the head of design at world-famous Bentley Motors and Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee.

Deinze is also known as the former starting location of the Gent-Wevelgem, from 1934 until 2004. The Gent-Wevelgem is a cycle road race held every year in late March. Followers of the race refer to it as the sprinters classic due to the flatness of the course’s ending.

Are you not able to travel to Deinze during the Gent-Wevelgem cycling race? No problem, the city of Deinze has plenty to offer! Two of our must see destinations within the Deinze are The Castle of Ooidonk and Sint Canarus Brewery.

The Castle of Ooidonk is a 16^th Century Estate, architecturally classified as Flemish-Spanish. The castle was first built as a fortress in 1230 to protect the city of Ghent. The fortress was destroyed in 1381 by Louis de Male, count of Flanders. The castle was destroyed in 1941 and again in 1579 due to religious turmoil but rebuilt in 1579. It’s open for visitors from the 1^st of May until the 15^th of September. 

Sint Canarus Brewery is one of the smallest breweries in the world. When you visit the brewery we recommend signing-up for the tour which includes a welcome speech in the tasting room by Dr. Canarus, a beer tasting of two beers and a social gathering where you have the option to buy beer to take home! The tours can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your preference and include a group of 20 to 25 people.
