MONTEREY LIFE

Abaco Islands

Wed, Aug 28, 2013 at 12:00AM

We’re traveling 250 miles south of Florida’s east coast to the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas! It’s a great area for fishing, shark diving and snorkeling. The Abaco Islands are a chain of islands consisting of Great Abaco, Little Abaco,  Man-0-War Cay and more! While we are there we will visit Mermaid Reef, Elbow Cay and Hope Town all located off of Great Abaco. Don’t worry, if you’re planning on traveling by plane, there are several great fishing, snorkeling and diving charters available!

Mermaid Reef is located just off of Great Abaco and is the island's best snorkeling spots! The reef has several species of tropical fish, such as yellowtail snapper, parrot fish and grouper. It’s a great beginner reef because it is fairly shallow, but keep an eye out for circling barracuda, and don’t wear anything relatively shiny!

Our next stop is Elbow Cay and Hope Town, settled in 1863 and just a short 4-mile trip away. The main attraction here is a picturesque red-and-white striped lighthouse. The town survives off of boat building, fishing and salvage operations. Views of the nearby Harbour are visible from the top of the lighthouse. If you have time during your stay we recommend visiting the Harbour, one of the Bahamas largest towns. The Harbour has an array of hotels, restaurants and shops to explore!
